About the Series
The purpose of the Playing Shakespeare Series is to encourage the actor to become a whole artist. Classes are directed/taught by John Basil.
John Basil has created the dynamic Playing Shakespeare Series by drawing on his own acting and directing experiences, as well as the time honored techniques of the many master teachers with whom he has studied worldwide. This totally unique approach to acting and directing encompasses training and performance practices of actors throughout history - from the Greeks to Shakespeare's own company. The actor soon develops an eye for quickly identifying the clues that Shakespeare placed so masterfully into the text.
With John's skilled and careful guidance, the clues are lifted into action and the rich humanity of these great characters comes splendidly to life. John has molded and applied these powerful skills to support and enhance the specific experience of today's American actor. By combining the classic and the contemporary, the actor finds a new level of creative expression. Characters fly off the page and come to vibrant life, physical and emotional blocks begin to melt away and the actor begins to regain the sense of fun and play that is often lost in the process of scholarly study. Actors who have completed this breakthrough program report a new sense of freedom and confidence when faced with any style of script, from the classics to cold commercial copy.
